"Come with me inside the Vatican"
Special invitation to our readers
August 5, 2008
By Robert Moynihan
I’m writing to invite you to come with me inside the Vatican.
In October, I will be leading Inside the Vatican magazine’s first pilgrimage in Italy. We will visit Assisi, Rome, and Vatican City.
Starting with Assisi on October 3 and 4, the feast day of St. Francis, the pilgrimage will include all the major pilgrim sites of Rome, and also visits into Vatican City itself, including special tours and meetings with a number of Vatican officials (for example, we will have an hour-long "Latin workshop" with one of the Latinists who writes Latin for the Pope).
The pilgrimage will be from October 2 to 10, 2008.
We have several spots still open, and a number of inquiries.
I will be with this tour, and it will be a rare chance to see the Vatican from my perspective, that of a writer who has covered Vatican affairs for almost 25 years, since 1984.
The Vatican, center of the Catholic Church, is considered inaccessible and impenetrable. And it is... The high Leonine walls around the tiny city state surround the Vatican with an effective barrier against easy access. Only a few hundred Vatican officials, and their guests, can pass through the city’s gates. We will have a chance to be among those few.
This will give all of us a chance to glimpse the "mind" and "heart" of the Vatican, its way of thinking and judging, and so to come to understand how it "works," how its decisions are made.
The Vatican’s structure includes numerous checks and balances, all aimed at preventing hasty decisions and supporting wise ones. Each of the Vatican’s offices -- and we will visit several -- has a special area of competence. We will take you inside these offices, explain who works where, and what their concerns and goals are. We will discuss how this tiny bureaucracy can be so long-lasting and influential.
And of course, we will discuss the mind and heart of Pope Benedict XVI, and how he, and each Pope, brings his own particular emphasis to his mission as successor of Peter.
Our pilgrimage will be a chance to reflect on the Church’s role in the world today, and offer a glimpse of the Vatican from the inside.
